जीव की प्रशंसा केवल चार लोग करते हैं
पहला श्वान – श्वान का कोई आश्रय नहीं होता। जैसे श्वान सड़क पर भटकता रहता है उसका कोई आश्रय नहीं होता उसी तरह स्वान प्रशंसा करता है कि हे जीव! तु तो हमसे भी श्रेष्ठ है क्योंकि हम तो केवल पांच छः घरों में ही भटक रहे हैं, तु तो चौरासी लाख में भटक रहा है।
दूसरा प्रशंसक सूकर है, जो कहता है कि हे जीव! तु तो हमसे भी श्रेष्ठ है क्योंकि हम तो केवल मलमूत्र में लोटते हैं, तु अपनी दशा को देख; ये देह अस्थि, मलमूत्र, मांस मज्जा पिण्ड का महाभण्डार है ऊपर से नीचे तक मलमूत्र का पिण्ड ही है
बड़े बड़े लोग शरीर के खाल को देखकर शायरियाँ बना देते हैं अभी नेक सी खाल पलट जाय तो नाक दबाकर व्यक्ति भाग जाता है।
देहेस्थि मांस रुधिरौ… आदि शंकराचार्य कह रहे हैं-
अंगम् गलितम्
क्या स्थिति है! हम तो फिर भी जब भूख लगती है तब मलमूत्र में मुख मारते हैं हे जीव! तु अपने को देख 100 वर्ष तक इस मलमूत्र के पिण्ड में लोटता रहता है।
तीसरा प्रशंसक है ऊॅंट। ऊँट कहता है हम तो सोचे थे कि हम ही सबसे तने बढ़े हैं, (हालांकि कितने ऊॅंट प्यासे मर जाते हैं क्योंकि उनको गरदन झुका कर पानी पीना नही आता)जो सतत् भूतकाल की स्मृतियों में रहे और कुछ न होते हुए भी सिर तना रहे; अभिमान, थोथा अभिमान व्यर्थ का, औपाधिक… कस्त्वम् कोऽहम् कुत आयात्… इन चीजों का अभिमान, किन वस्तुओं का।
चौथा प्रशंसक गधा है, गधा जैसे बोझ लादे फिर रहा है ऐसे ही तु भी तो जन्म जन्मान्तरों के प्रारब्ध का बोझ लिए फिर रहा है। हम तो सुबह का बोझ शाम को उतार देते हैं तु तो सौ-सौ जन्मों का बोझ अपनी पीठ पर लिए पड़ा है। तु तो हमसे धन्य है।
इन चारों के अलावा जीव की किसी ने प्रशंसा नहीं की है। यही जीव का वास्तविक स्वरूप है।

The praise of the Jiva is sung only by these four:
1.The Dog:
A dog has no permanent shelter; it roams aimlessly on the streets. The dog says, “O Jiva! You are greater than me because I wander only among five or six houses, but you wander through 8.4 million life forms in the cycle of birth and death.”
2.The Pig:
The pig remarks, “ You are superior to me because I merely wallow in filth, but look at your condition! Your body is a heap of bones, flesh, marrow, and excrement, a storehouse of impurity from top to bottom.
Many admire the skin of the body and compose poetry about it, but if that same skin were to rott, people would run away, holding their noses. ‘Dehesthi mansa rudhirau….’
Adi Shankaracharya described this condition saying;
‘Angam galitam…’
(When the body decays…)
We pigs feed on filth only when we are hungry, but look at you; wallowing in this filthy body for a hundred years, clinging to it as if it is a treasure.” What a pity!
3.The Camel:
The camel observes, “We thought we were the only ones who carried ourselves with pride. (Even though many camels die of thirst because they cannot lower their necks to drink water.) But look at you! Always lost in memories of the past, yet walking around with your head held high in arrogance, false and futile pride, born out of ignorance.
Why such a pride in ephemeral things? ‘Who are you? Where have you come from? What is your essence?’ These questions remain unanswered, yet you cling to baseless arrogance.”
4.The Donkey:
The donkey says, “ You are even greater than me because I carry my burden only from morning until evening, and then I am free. But you carry the heavy burden of karmas from countless past lives on your back, birth after birth. Truly, you surpass us in bearing the load.”
Apart from these four, no one else has praised the Jiva. This is the sad reality!
