भक्ति का अर्थ होता है भगवान के साथ सम्बन्ध को स्थापित करना।
जैसे छोटे बालक और एक बड़ी स्त्री में माता और पुत्र का सम्बन्ध है ऐसे ही जीव और ब्रह्म के बीच में जो सम्बन्ध है उसका नाम ही भक्ति है। भक्ति का विशुद्ध अर्थ सम्बन्ध होता है।
किसी ने पूछा- हम अपनी भक्ति कहाँ से शुरू करें?
आपके परिवार में कितने सदस्य हैं? बोले- चार लोग हैं। मैं, मेरी पत्नी, एक बेटा और एक बेटी।
कल से पांच मान लेना। पांचवाँ कौन? पांचवाँ जो मन्दिर में बैठा है। रोज जो चार के लिए करो, वो पांचवें के लिए कल से शुरू कर दो।
चार का जनमदिन मनाते हो, पांचवे का भी जनमदिन मनाना शुरू कर दो। चार के साथ बैठकर भोजन करते हो, पांचवे के लिए भी भोजन बनाना शुरू कर दो। चार के साथ बैठकर बातचीत करते हो, पांचवे के साथ भी बैठकर बातचीत करना शुरू कर दो। चार के कपड़े सिलवाते हो, पांचवे के लिए भी कपड़े सिलवाओ। चार के लिए मेहनत करते हो, पांचवे के लिए भी मेहनत शुरू कर दो।
सारी व्यवस्था में परमात्मा को जोड़ लेना ही भक्ति का प्रारम्भ है। इससे सरल और क्या कहा जाय? विशुद्ध भगवद् रति ही भक्ति की विशुद्ध परिभाषा है।

The meaning of Bhakti is to establish a personal relationship with the Divine!
Like, between a small child and an elderly lady, there is natural feeling of the mother and the child, in the same way, the connection between the Brahman and the Jeeva is called Bhakti. The true interpretation of Bhakti is a ‘personal relationship’.
Someone asked that from where should we start our Bhakti?
How many people are there in your family? He replied; four. Myself, my wife, one son and one daughter!
From tomorrow, include one more member into your family and say there are five members. Whatever you have been doing for the four members until now, start doing the same for the fifth member from now on!
You celebrate the birthday of four, now celebrate the birthday of the fifth member as well. Four of you sit on the dining table and have your meals, now include the fifth and have one more plate served for him. Post dinner, the four of you sit and talk now include the fifth person also in your discussion. You get new clothes made for the four of you, now make a new set of clothes for the fifth also! You strive to work hard for four now do it for five!
To include the Almighty in all the arrangements itself is Bhakti. What is easier than this? ‘Vishuddha Bhagwad Rati’ is the most apt, simple and the truest definition of Bhakti!

भक्तिः ईश्वरेण सह सम्बन्धं स्थापयितुं इत्यर्थः ।
यथा लघुबालस्य ज्येष्ठस्य च सम्बन्धः मातृपुत्रस्य, तथैव जीवस्य ब्रह्मणः च सम्बन्धः भक्ति उच्यते । भक्तेः शुद्धार्थः सम्बन्धः।
कश्चित् पृष्टवान्- अस्माकं भक्तिः कुतः आरभ्यताम् ?
भवतः कुटुम्बे कति सदस्याः सन्ति ? स आह- चत्वारः जनाः सन्ति। अहं मम भार्या पुत्रः कन्या च।
श्वः आरभ्य पञ्च विचार्यताम्। पञ्चमी कः ? पञ्चमी मन्दिरे उपविष्टः अस्ति। चतुर्थस्य नित्यं यत् किमपि करोषि, श्वः आरभ्य पञ्चमस्य कृते अपि तथैव कुरु।
चतुर्णां जन्मदिनम् आचरसि, पञ्चमस्य अपि जन्मदिनम् आचरितुं आरभत। चतुर्भिः सह उपविश्य खादसि, पञ्चमस्य अपि भोजनं सज्जीकर्तुं आरभसे। त्वं चतुर्भिः सह उपविश्य वार्तालापं करोषि, उपविश्य पञ्चमेन सह अपि वार्तालापं आरभसे। चतुर्णां कृते वस्त्रं सितं प्राप्नोषि, पञ्चमस्य कृते अपि वस्त्रं सितं प्राप्नोषि। भवन्तः चतुर्णां कृते परिश्रमं कुर्वन्ति, पञ्चमस्य कृते अपि परिश्रमं कर्तुं आरभन्ते।
भक्तिस्य आरम्भः सम्पूर्णे व्यवस्थायां ईश्वरं समावेशयितुं भवति। अस्मात् सरलतरं किं वक्तुं शक्यते ? ईश्वरभक्तिः शुद्धा भक्तिपरिभाषा।
