दक्षिणा का अर्थ होता है निश्चित पारिश्रमिक देना। कोई पंडित, कोई पुजारी, कोई ब्राम्हण ने आपके लिए कोई अनुष्ठान किया; जो आप नहीं कर सकते थे तो आपने उनके परिश्रम का पारिश्रमिक दिया। उसका नाम ही दक्षिणा है।
दान अलग वस्तु को कहते हैं। अपनी सहायता के लिए दान किया जाता है। दान जिसको दिया गया, उसमें उसका हित विचार नहीं होता, जब दान किया जाता है तो अपना ही तो विचार होता है।
हम भूमि दान करते हैं तो अपने हित का विचार करते हैं, हम गौ दान करते हैं तो अपने हित का विचार करते हैं। उसकी परिभाषा अलग है। इस पर बहुत विचार होना चाहिए। शास्त्र ने कहा-
अदत्त दानस्च भवेत् दरिद्रो
दारिद्र दोषेण करोति पापम्।
पापप्रभावात् नरकं प्रयाति
पुनर्दरिद्रः पुनरेव पापी॥
जिसको नहीं देना चाहिए, उसको देना जीवन में दरिद्रता लाता है
सदपात्र दानस्च भवेत् धनाड्यः॥
सदपात्र को कुछ देना, जीवन में धन लेकर आता है।
ये बहुत सावधानी का विषय है।

The meaning of ‘Dakshina’ is to provide adequate compensation. Say, a Pandit or a priest or a Brahmin has performed a religious ceremony for you which you were unable to do yourself and you are compensating or providing the remuneration for his/her labour. This is ‘Dakshina’!
‘Daan’ or donation is different. You are donating something for your own benefit! When you donate, at that point the benefit of the receiver is not borne in mind, instead at that time the donor thinks of his own self-interest.
When we donate land or donate a cow then the self-interest takes precedence! This is a different matter, altogether! A lot of thought needs to go into this! The scriptures say –
‘Adatta daanascha bhavet daridro
Daaridra doshena karotti paapam|
Paap prabhaavat narakam prayaati
Punardaridraha: punareva paapi||
The one, who is an undeserving candidate for receiving the donation, giving to such an individual begets poverty;
‘Saddpaatra daanascha bhavet dhannaddyaha||’
To give to a deserving person, begets wealth!
We need to pay attention and understand the implications very carefully!
