Pundrik ji Sutra

Radharmano Vijayate

English —

II Shree Radharamanno Vijayatey II
II Jai Gaur II

The beauty of our speech is also a great attribute in our lives. In the world, the ones who speak beautifully and respectfully are truly respected.

There is a verse that explains this:
‘Keyuraani na bhushayanti purusham haraha na chandrojwalaha, nastanam na vilapenam na kusumam naalankrataha moordhajaha I
Vaanyeka samalankaroti purusham ya sanskratam dhaaryatey, ksheeyantey khalu bhooshanaani satatam vaagbhooshanam bhooshanam II’
“Ornaments do not beautify a person—neither armlets nor garlands bright as the moon nor fragrances or ointments, flowers, nor styled hair.
Only the cultured and refined words, truly adorn a person. Other ornaments fade away, but the beauty of one’s speech remains supreme.”

Here, the phrase “Sanskṛtaṃ dhāryate” (refined speech) has two meanings. One refers to using well-formed and refined language. The other, deeper meaning refers to speaking  meaningfully and in a cultured manner. Our country has infused the speech with so much culture and sensitivity that is even reflected in the way people address each other.

For example, in Indian languages, we carefully choose whether to say “tu”, “tum”, or “aap” (all meaning “you” in English) depending on the level of respect or intimacy. In English, however, there is just “you”—whether you speak to a child, a friend, or an elder, everyone is addressed in the same way. There’s no layer of respect in the word. But in the Indian context, a great deal of thought has been added to this.

To say “tu” to someone, there must be deep love and closeness. Even if someone is very close, calling them “tu” at the wrong time can offend them. Unless there is a deep affection and intimacy, using “tu” might be odd.

Let me share this fact with you;
In the Braj Bhasha (language), there is no “tum” or “aap”. In  Braj, even Lord Krishna is addressed as “tu”.
For example: “Hey Kanhaiya, tu idhar aa” (O Krishna, come here).
This shows how much love and sweetness the Braj language carries. To say “aap” in Braj would mean there is a distance between the two. If a Brijwasi says “Aap kahaan ja rahe ho?” (Where are you going?), it means they consider you to be a stranger or not close enough.

So you see, even in pronunciation and the forms of address, the values of the place deeply influence how people speak.
