Pundrik Ji Sutra

Radharamano Vijayate

Attachment weakens a person. The Bhagavata Purana tells the story of Jada Bharata, who became attached to a fawn. This attachment bound him in the cycle of birth and death for many lifetimes.

Attachment drives us to violence, and it is attachment that leads us to unrighteousness. King Dhritarashtra and Queen Gandhari were deeply attached to their son, Duryodhana. This attachment prevented them from embracing impartiality. When a ruler lacks impartiality, then unrighteousness and discrimination spreads in society.

Dhritarashtra’s attachment led to such a tragic point that the honor of his household, the dignity of the daughter in law was torn to shreds. Draupadi was humiliated in a full assembled court and no one present dared to speak against it. The family was their own, yet if we look at the first verse of the Bhagavad Gita, we see:

“In the sacred land of Kurukshetra, gathered for battle, my sons and the sons of Pandu—what did they do, O Sanjaya?”

Here, Dhritarashtra refers to “My sons” and “Pandu’s sons” separately. Had he been a wise and an impartial king, he would have asked, “What are both the sides doing?” because both were his very own.

That is why, though both Arjuna and Dhritarashtra heard the Gita, it affected them differently. Arjuna saw his enemies as his own men, while Dhritarashtra saw his own as enemies. Both suffered; one due to delusion and the other due to attachment.
Lord Krishna on the other hand was neither attached nor deluded. He was established in truth, equanimity or impartiality!
