‘Daan’ or donation and ‘Bhiksha’ or alms are two entirely separate things. Donation is not giving alms! ‘Bhiksha’ and ‘Daan’ are separate altogether. Alms are given to the needy. We need to clearly understand the difference. Many people ask whom to give and whom not to give?
The one who is satisfied with whatever you give him, such a person should be given everything. If you give ten rupees and he says that Babu, give me twenty then please don’t give him. If he wants more then he should do some work, why is he begging? If he wants more then he needs to labour to earn it. Why only twenty, he could even earn two hundred!
If the person is happy with whatever is given to him then this person deserves to be given more. Please give more! Because, unfortunately he has landed in penury or he has chosen to seek alms and be happy with whatever he gets. He takes whatever he gets and engages himself in Bhajan. Or whatever he chooses!
The one who is satisfied with whatever he gets is a ‘Bhikshuk’ or a mendicant. Beggar is a different thing. Beggar is a negative word whereas a mendicant relates to ‘Sadhana’ or austerities. Lord Buddha used to address His disciples as ‘Bhikhu’! All His disciples are mendicants or ‘Bhikhus’!
There are so many great personalities at our place who led their entire life on ‘Bhiksha’ and Bhajan. It is said that Sri ‘Shuka Devji’ Maharaj used to seek ‘Bhiksha’ only from five houses, even Sri ‘Sudam Dev’ accepted ‘Bhiksha’ from five houses and devoted himself in Bhajan!
Therefore, ‘Bhiksha’ or alms is very sacred!
